Rangers at the Kruger National Park had to call the bomb squad on Friday after a device, linked to a battery was discovered near a railway.
The device, which was identified as a pipe bomb was detonated by the bomb squad at the scene.
Rangers who were patrolling the area alongside their K9 unit also flushed out two suspicious individuals who were hiding inside a pipeline underneath the railway line.
The CEO of SANParks Fundisile Mketeni praised the unit for their swift action and vigilance.
He said it was unfortunate that South Africans were involved in such affairs and that they did not seem to realise that they were hurting their own people and destroying their heritage.
