President Jacob Zuma, who spent time in hospital over the weekend suffering from exhaustion, will miss his new government's first meeting on Tuesday.
Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa said Zuma will not attend the cabinet meeting but will continue to rest at home this week.
Zuma left hospital late Sunday, the day after he was admitted for routine tests.
The 72-year-old leader checked into hospital on Saturday after ANC officials insisted that he take a break because of the punishing election programme which had taking its toll.
The cabinet talks will continue through to Thursday.
