Gauteng police have arrested a Soweto mother following the death of her two children over the weekend.
Police said the 31-year-old woman faces charges of culpable homicide.
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela, says the children died on Saturday night after the building they were in caught fire.
The woman had allegedly locked the children alone in a flat with a heater switched on.
Makhubela says the children were pronounced dead in hospital on Saturday, after neighbours broke in to help them.
Meanwhile Eastern Cape police have opened an inquest docket after two children, aged three and five, burnt to death in a shack in informal settlement near Butterworth.
Police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha, says the Asekhona and Lukhona Tengani, were locked inside the shack on Wedesday night by a relative who left to go somewhere.
He says an overturned candle may have started the blaze.
