Eskom says it will implement Stage 2 load shedding from 8 am on Sunday until 5 am on Monday due to a constrained and vulnerable system.
The embattled power utility implemented Stage Two load shedding on Saturday evening, after a conveyor belt failure at the Medupi power station.
Eskom said in a statement that the conveyor belt failure has since been repaired and the plant is feeding power into the grid.
It says while a number of units were brought back online following repairs and maintenance, the incident, as well as a loss of additional generation units, caused it to deplete its diesel and pump storage levels.
Eskom said it was essential to implement Stage 2 load shedding in order to help it replenish both water levels at pumped storage schemes and diesel at its open-cycle gas turbines.
Eskom said this was to create adequate reserve capacity to place it in a better position to stabilise for the week ahead, as South Africans return to work.
It said it would give South Africans regular updates on Sunday on the prognosis for Monday and its recovery efforts for the week ahead.
