Eskom said two security guards who were escorting technicians to fix a fault were gunned down in Phillipi East in Cape Town on Monday.

The power utility said the guards were employed by Vusalsizwe Security which is contracted by Eskom to provide armed escort services for technicians working in high-risk areas.

General Manager for Distribution in the Western Cape, Alwie Lester, said their employees were working to restore supply due to a fault.

He said a preliminary report indicated that the work had been completed and the team was leaving the area when the attack on the security vehicle took place.

Lester said the Eskom employees managed to escape but the two guards were killed.

He said police were investigating the incident and no further information was immediately available.
