Eskom granted another bailout

Parliament has passed two Bills which will see Eskom receiving close on 50 billion rand from government within the next year.

The Eskom Special Appropriation Bill paves the way for the first payment of 23 billion rand to Eskom -  which is expected to be funded from the sale of government’s non-strategic core assets.

During Wednesday's debate in Parliament, Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene once again remained mum on what government assets had been sold to fund the lifeline to the troubled power utility.

Another Bill also passed Wednesday  paves the way for a 60 billion rand government loan to Eskom to be converted into equity.

Opposition parties opposed the Bills.

Meanwhile: Public hearings by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa on an Eskom application for a steep tariff hike, have concluded.

Nersa is expected to make its announcement on the application next week.

Over the two days, Nersa heard submission from various organisations, including the Nelson Mandela Bay  Business Chamber, political parties and unions - and not one of them wanted Nersa to grant the application.
