The Department of Correctional Services says it has foiled an escape plan by inmates at Zonderwater Correctional Centre that include Czech fugitive Radovan Krecjir.
Department spokesperson, Manelisi Wolela, says a number of illegal items were discovered and confiscated in different cells during a search operation.
He says these illegal items included cell phones and cell-phone chargers, a knife, stun devices, correctional officials' uniform, as well as a firearm and ammunition.
"Internal and external investigations have been launched by both Correctional Services and SAPS. Correctional Services continues to assess and strengthen it's security strategies and operations in all its 240 correctional facilities across the country, to ensure the positive trend that has emerged over the number of years, is maintained in terms of the reduction of escape's across the country" he added.
