Two judges facing possible impeachment have been given an extension by a Parliamentary Committee to provide extenuating circumstances that could save their jobs.
The Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services on Tuesday extended the deadline for justices, John Hlophe and Nkola Motata, to 15 November for them to provide the Committee with reasons why they should not face impeachment.
This comes after the two were found guilty of misconduct by the Judicial Services Commission.
Judge Hlophe's matter dates back to 2008 and relates to allegations of corruption linked to the Thint arms deal, which was before the Constitutional Court.
Two other judges had laid a complaint about an attempt to improperly influence the outcome of the case and other related issues.
Meanwhile, Portfolio Committee chairperson, Bulelani Magwanishe, said there were two complaints relating to judge Nkola Motata.
He said one concerned his defence in his criminal trial in a drunk driving case, and the other is a charge of racism, related to remarks he allegedly made at the scene of the accident where he had crashed into a wall of a house in Johannesburg.
"Once the judges have provided reasons why they should not be impeached, the committee will deliberate on the matter on 22 November," Magwanishe said.
