The Hawks have arrested another suspect in the ongoing Steinhoff investigation.
A spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale says 79-year-old Gerhardus Burger was arrested and appeared in the Pretoria Specialised Crimes Court on Thursday.
She says the arrest emanates from an ongoing investigation into Steinhoff, where in November 2017, the then Chief Executive Officer, the late Markus Jooste, is said to have shared information on the selling of Steinhoff shares before they fell.
Burger is accused of getting a tip-off from the late Jooste who instructed him to sell 39 000 Steinhoff shares.
Colonel Mogale says Burger knew that Jooste was the Steinhoff CEO and, by his employ, had inside information all the time.
Burger is facing three counts of contravention of the Financial Markets Act (Insider Trading).
During Thursday's appearance, Burger pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years in prison suspended for five years.
The court also ordered that the money accrued from the sale of the shares be forfeited to the State.
His co-accused Stephanus Johannes Grobler who is out on bail is due back in court on 4 October 2024.
