Elderly man arrested for stealing Covid-19 relief funds

A second suspect who was arrested in connection with the theft of millions of Rand in Covid-19 relief funds will appear in the Malamulele Magistrates Court in Limpopo on Friday.

Spokesperson Captain Matimba Maluleke says they received information about a 75-year-old man who withdrew R150 000 from a company account to conceal it from the ongoing investigation.

Police on Saturday arrested the 47-year-old director of the company, Dorris Mashimbye.

Mashimbye allegedly claimed UIF for her former employees whose contracts were terminated before the country went into lockdown.

Captain Maluleke says she remains in custody and will appear in court again on Monday for a formal bail application.
