Police in Jeffreys Bay have arrested two suspects days after an elderly resident was attacked and severely assaulted in his home earlier in September.
Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said on the 13th of September, the 82-year-old man was found by his daughter lying on the floor with his hands bound.
Colonel Naidu said household item were taken after the suspects allegedly gained entry by forcing the burglar bars open.
She said the man, identified as George Mildenhall, was hospitalised in Gqeberha where he succumbed to his injuries a week later, on 20 September.
Two suspects, aged 27 and 19, were arrested on 16 September at a house in Griffiths Streen in Oceanview, Colonel Naidu said in a statement.
“Property taken from the house in Mossel Street in Jeffreys Bay was recovered,” she added.
“Zakhele Yake (27) and his girlfriend, Ria Maku (19) appeared in the Humansdorp magistrate court on 18 September on charges of house robbery and attempted murder.
“They appeared again in court on 22 September and now face a charge of murder,” said Colonel Naidu.
The paid are remanded in custody until 28 September for a formal bail application.
Sarah Baartman District Commissioner, Major General Zolani Xawuka praised the detectives for their speedy reaction to information received from the community.
“The motive behind such heinous act was robbery, a senseless crime that has claimed a life. We are fully committed to ensuring that justice is served. We applaud the community’s commitment and support in helping us swiftly apprehend the suspects,” said Maj Gen Xawuka.
