An 84-year-old medical doctor from Kwazulu Natal is the fourth and final person to be arrested in connection with an alleged insurance fraud scam.
The doctor was allegedly called out by an undertaker in May 2020 to assist in signing a death certificate, which is standard practice.
A spokesperson for the police in Durban Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo says the doctor claimed that he saw a dead body and certified the person as dead which subsequently led to the Department of Home Affairs issuing a death certificate.
He says the suspects then informed authorities that the body was cremated.
A life policy of R6.5 million was submitted to an insurance company that conducted an internal investigation.
Captain Mhlongo says when police realised that the deceased person was actually alive the matter was handed over to the Hawks.
The policyholder, Emmnuel Ponen (33), the claimant Merlen Munusamy (45) and the funeral parlour owner Sifiso Gabela (47) were arrested last year.,
All four suspects will appear in court together on the 17th of March.
