Elderly couple tied up in fatal Free State home invasion

Police in the Free State are appealing for public assistance after three armed robbers entered an elderly couple’s house, killed the husband, robbed them of firearms and cash before fleeing in their vehicle.

The suspect tied up both victims before fleeing the scene.

It is alleged that the couple was sleeping in their Orangeville home when the suspects entered their bedroom in the early hours of Friday morning.

Police said the two woke up with one of the suspects standing near the bedroom door, whilst the other two were on both sides of the bed.

Police spokesperson, Captain Patience Mahlatsi said the 68-year-old husband succumbed to stab wounds after attempting to fight off one of the men.

She said the deceased's hands and feet were tied and he was left on the ground.

The robbers then threatened and demanded money from the 67-year-old wife who took them to the safe.

They allegedly demanded more cash and resorted to taking the second firearm found in a different safe in the house before tying her to the bed.

Captain Mahlatsi said the victim managed to untie herself and called for help.

She said her husband was declared dead at the scene.

Police urge anyone with information to contact their nearest police station.
