Eight officials from the South African Social Security Agency who face more than 1,000 fraud-related charges will again appear in court on April 1 for a bail hearing.
The eighth official, who had been on the run, handed herself over at the Kliptown police station on Sunday, March 23rd, 2025, accompanied by her lawyer.
This follows the court appearance of her seven co-accused in the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court on 18 March 2025 on more than 1,000 fraud-related charges.
They appeared alongside three others who SASSA did not employ.
SASSA spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi said the arrests were made following a tip-off.
The latest development brings the number of SASSA officials allegedly involved in various counts of fraud to eight.
“SASSA is pleased by the latest development and hopes that the law will take its course to make people accountable for their actions.
“As SASSA, we will continue to work with the law enforcement agencies and provide them with all the necessary information at our disposal that they need to ensure successful prosecution of all those involved”, said national spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi.”
He said it’s part of an ongoing process by the agency, directed by the Minister of Social Development, Nokuzola Tolashe, to clamp down on fraud and corrupt activities in all SASSA offices across the country.
SASSA appeals to members of the public to work with the agency and report grant fraud or corruption to 0800 60 10 11 or the National Anti-Corruption Hotline at 0800 701 701.
