Police in the Western Cape said eight cash-in-transit robbery suspects were killed in a shootout with members of a multi-disciplinary team in Khayelitsha in Cape Town on Monday night.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Novela Potelwa, said the team comprised members of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Special Task Force, intelligence operatives, and private security company officials.
They had followed up on “vital information” about a possible cash-in-transit robbery and pounced on the suspects in Town Two in Khayelitsha early on Monday evening.
Potelwa said as the team approached the suspects they started firing shots at the police who retaliated.
“As a consequence eight suspects were shot dead and five were arrested,” she said.
Police seized seven AK 47 rifles, two R5 rifles, one “Dashprod” SAR M14 rifle, two 9mm pistols, three improvised explosive chargers, and numerous magazines loaded with ammunition on the scene.
Potelwa said DPCI detectives are hard at work with investigations and following up on additional information.
