Eight killed by alleged drunk truck driver in KZN

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula has lamented the deaths of eight people who died on Wednesday after their vehicles were hit by an alleged drunk driver in Jozini, KwaZulu Natal.

Mbalula said 28 others were injured, after the driver of a truck carrying a load of sugarcane, lost control of the vehicle.

He said the truck hit two busses, a minibus taxi, a bakkie and a car.

“Initially, the driver attributed the crash to brake failure but police discovered that he may have been driving under the influence of alcohol,” the Minister said in a statement.

“We call on all road users to exercise restraint and refrain from excessive alcohol consumption,” he pleaded.

Mbalula said the driver was arrested and will appear in court soon.
