The Economic Freedom Fighters has bemoaned the withdrawal of rape charges against the 14 suspects who were accused of sexually assaulting eight women during a music video shoot in Krugersdorp earlier this year.

The National Prosecuting Authority  on Thursday decided to withdraw the charges of rape, sexual assault, and robbery with aggravating circumstances against all 13 men and the minor.

The NPA said DNA results could not link any of the suspects to the rapes.

EFF national spokesperson Leigh-Ann Mathys said there’s a possibility that the DNA process could have been compromised.

She said it’s an unfortunate reality.

“On the flip side, if indeed all 14 men are innocent then were are hopeless, because then we  are further assured of the dismal dysfunction of the South African Police Service,” said Mathys.

However, NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonodwana said the investigation would continue.

“Upon consultation with the complainants in the matter, and evidential material currently at the disposal of the NPA, it became apparent that there is insufficient evidence to proceed with the prosecution.

Prosecutorial-guided investigations will continue in pursuit of justice for all women affected by this heinous crime.”

Mjonondwane said the men would remain in custody as they are still being charged with contravening the immigration act.

They will all re-appear in court on Tuesday.
