The Department of Basic Education says the strike by teachers union Sadtu has had little impact in most parts of the country.
Department spokesperson, Panyaza Lesufi, says reports received from most provinces indicate that it was a normal school day.
He says early reports indicate that the North West province is the most affected with 224 teachers reported to be absent while the gates at seven schools were locked and no schooling taking place.
Lesufi says there were no reports of any disruptions in the rest of the provinces, including the Eastern Cape.
Members of Sadtu are marching to Parliament and the Union Buildings to press home their demand for the resignation of Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga and her director general, Bobby Soobrayan.
The union has accused them of reneging on agreed upon collective bargaining processes.
