The Eastern Cape Transport Department says an attempted cash-in-transit heist in the early hours of Tuesday morning on the R63 between Middledrift and Debe Nek led to the closure of the road for up to five hours.
Department spokesperson Untahi Binqose said this caused a massive traffic backup, as crime scene investigators and explosives experts combed the scene.
He said the report they received was that no money was taken from the security vehicle.
Binqose said the scene had since been cleared and traffic was flowing again.
“The [department] wishes to commend motorists for their patience and understanding,” Binqose said in a brief statement.
