Cape Town lawyer jailed for sex offences

File

A Cape Town lawyer has been jailed for an effective eight years following his conviction on charges of rape and sexual exploitation of a child.

Theo Hartzenberg was sentenced on Tuesday in the Wynberg Regional Court, which also ordered that his name be added to the national child protection register and the national register of sex offenders.

His victims were young boys.

The National Prosecuting Authority said he was convicted in February.

Spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalila, said Hartzenberg was sentenced to eight years direct imprisonment for statutory rape, with three years suspended for five years on condition he is convicted for a similar charge during the period of suspension.

He received a similar sentence on the sexual exploitation charge as well as a further three months for engaging in sexual services of a person older than 18 years.

Ntabazlila said this was also suspended for five years on condition that he is acquitted of committing a similar offence during the period of suspension.

He said the court ordered that sentences run concurrently.
