The Department of Transport says 26 fatal accidents were reported over the Easter weekend resulting in 28 fatalities.
Releasing the figures on Friday, Transport Minister, Fikile Mbalula, said that most of the incidents involved pedestrians and single-vehicle crashes.
He said this was in contrast with the 128 accidents recorded over the same period last year, which claimed 162 lives.
Mbalula also said that there was an estimated 70 per cent reduction in vehicle movement on the country’s roads due to the lockdown.
The Eastern Cape recorded five fatal accidents over the Easter weekend resulting in five deaths.
However, the province is also mourning the loss of 15 people who perished in a horror accident on the N2 between Mt Ayliff and Mt Frere earlier this week.
