The Department of Transport says the Easter road death toll is down this year.
Transport Minister, Sibusiso Ndebele, released statistics today showing that 215 people were killed in 181 accidents country-wide.
Last year that number stood at 296 fatalities in 215 accidents.
Minister Ndebele attributed the drop in road fatalities to special road safety initiatives and also to law abiding road users whom he says conducted themselves in a responsible manner.
According to the statistics 25 people were killed in 20 accidents in the Eastern Cape, while there were nine fatalities in the Western Cape in 13 accidents.
Meanwhile, Minister Ndebele launched a "Think Pedestrian" Campaign.
This was in response to alarming statistics that indicate that pedestrians alone account for nearly 40 percent of fatalities annually.
Transport Ministry spokesperson, Logan Maistry says the "Think Pedestrian" campaign, is aimed at stabilizing, then reducing, these statistics through intensive awareness and education programmes for drivers and pedestrians.
He says the programme is being introduced in partnership with logistics company, Equestra.
