Durban policemen attacked by angry community

Police in Durban have arrested three people on charges of public violence after two Flying Squad members were attacked by a large group of people in Shallcross.

The incident happened on Sunday when the members were following up on a report of drug dealing in the area.

During the chaos, a police rifle was stolen and vehicles stoned and damaged.

Paramedics were also prevented from reaching the injured policemen.

Spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, said a police contingent comprising Public Order Police, National Intervention Unit, K9 unit and Airwing joined local Chatsworth police in restoring order.

Mbele said the stolen police rifle was also recovered.

She said the suspects face charges of public violence, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, theft of a firearm, malicious damage to property and obstructing police in their duties when they appear in court this week.
