Police destroyed confiscated drugs worth a staggering R90 million that had been seized during operations in the Eastern and Western Cape provinces.
National spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, said Thursday’s drug destruction operation in the Western Cape was the fourth during the current financial year.
She said the most recent operation in Gauteng was last October when drugs worth an estimated R800 million went up in smoke.
Mathe said the drugs destroyed on Thursday included Tik, cocaine, and mandrax.
She noted that some of the drugs that were destroyed were seized during busts in Vredenburg where mandrax tablets worth R10 million were seized, as well as a bust in Beaufort West where mandrax tablets worth R2.5 million were seized and the suspected jailed for 15 years.
Mathe said the national commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, noted that police had registered great successes in intercepting drugs in the country.
“It is worth noting that in the past three months, police have seized cocaine worth R 200 million in various drug busts at our ports of entry,” he said.
General Masemola said the first two consignments of cocaine were seized in Durban harbour last October, while another major find was in November at the Gqeberha sea port where coke worth R65 million was seized.
“This drug destruction thus demonstrates the relentless efforts of our men and women in blue to remove these drugs that destroy lives and livelihoods”, he said.
