South African customs officials seized close to R50 million in drugs in 4 separate busts at the country’s ports of entry so far this month.
The SA Revenue Service says in the latest incident on Sunday night, officials discovered R3 million worth of Mandrax tablets hidden in a truck entering South Africa from Mozambique at the Lebombo border post.
In total, 66 000 Mandrax tablets were uncovered.
Also at the weekend, a woman was arrested with 4kg of cocaine hidden in books in her check-in luggage at the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.
The drugs were valued at R1.2 million.
On Thursday, customs officials discovered R40.1 million in male enhancement drugs at the same airport in what SARS called the “largest Viagra bust”, and on Wednesday, more than 15 kilograms of pure cocaine worth R4.4 million was discovered hidden in a passenger’s luggage at the OR Tambo airport.
