Drugs found hidden in religious ornaments at OR Tambo

Drugs confiscated at OR Tambo

SAPS

A consignment of drugs worth R4.7 million which was destined for South Africa from India has been intercepted at the OR Tambo International Airport at the weekend.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Athlenda Mathe, says the discovery came following investigations between a multidisciplinary team including SAPS members and the State Security Agency based at the airport.

Mathe says further information provided by Crime Intelligence members led to the detection of the drugs which weighed 21.4 kilograms and was hidden inside religious ornaments.

No arrested have however been made, but the matter has been brought to the attention of the Authorities in India.

Mathe says they will continue working closely to establish who the import agents are and to establish the destination point in the country.
