Drug traffickers beware- this 'Buddy' is not your friend

K9 Officer Buddy, considered a key weapon in the fight against drugs in Gauteng

SAPS

The K9 Academy in Pretoria is bursting with pride yet again following the successful training of a Border Collie named Buddy.

The now 6-year-old Buddy was donated to the West Rand K9 unit in Roodepoort in 2017 and was teamed up with his handler Warrant Officer Wiese who took him to the Academy to start his training as a sniffer dog.

Buddy soon proved to have a nose for narcotics and it did not take long for him to start working in the field.

K9 Officer Buddy is now considered one of the key weapons in the fight against drugs in Gauteng.

Over the past six months, he has assisted in the arrest of 56 suspects and seized drugs worth more than R30 million.

Warrant Officer Wiese says Buddy is a thrill to work with as he has so much enthusiasm, drive and skill.

Buddy's career highlight was sniffing out drugs hidden in storybooks, clothing and art that traffickers were trying to smuggle out of South Africa to countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Greece and the Netherlands.
