Police in Bloemfontein have opened up an inquest docket after an unknown woman was found dead in a room in a guesthouse on Friday.
Police Spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele says the African woman, estimated to be in her late thirties, arrived at the guesthouse alone in Parkwest on Thursday.
She told the owner that she was from Kroonstad and on her way to a funeral in the Eastern Cape.
Brigadier Makhele says the woman had no luggage or any identification with her and simply asked to book into a room to rest.
He says on Friday morning at 10, cleaning staff knocked on the door and realised that something was wrong.
Police and emergency services were called to the scene where she was declared dead.
Brigadier Makhele says the circumstances that led to her death will only be clear once a post mortem has been conducted.
He says the woman was wearing a pink floral dress.
