The SA National Taxi Council says the recent drop in the petrol price did not warrant a decrease in taxi fares.
Santaco says if it had to base taxi fares on the petrol price then it would have to charge commuters a lot more.
Santaco general secretary, Phillip Taaibosch, says the decision to increase taxi fares in May was taken because it was becoming more expensive to repair taxis and buy spare parts.
He says prior to that, there had not been a fare increase in Gauteng in four years.
