Driver caught with heroin worth R75 million abandons bid for bail

Bonginkosi Gamedze (48)

An alleged drug trafficker who was found in possession of heroin worth over R75 million has abandoned his bid for bail.

The Swazi national, 48-year-old Bonginkosi Gamedze was travelling from Mozambique to Badplaas where he was arrested as a result of a tip-off.

Spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Monica Nyuswa says the accused is charged with contravention of provisions of Section 5(a) of the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act 140 of 1992.

She says now that he has abandoned his bail, the matter was remanded to the 21st of September for further investigation.

The Hawks, who arrested Gamedze on the 17th of July were assisted by various roleplayers and even had to get help from the Elukwatini Fire Department to assist in opening concealed compartments of the truck.

They found 250 bricks of heroin weighing 1 kg each.

The drug bust was a result of the Trilateral Planning Cell (TPC) team that was established by the ministries responsible for policing the Republics of South Africa, Mozambique and Tanzania to counter heroin trafficking through the Southern Route.

Police said they would also investigate how the truck was cleared at the border before entering South Africa.
