A massive manhunt is underway following the escape of dozens of trial-awaiting prisoners from Malmesbury in the Western Cape.
The number of inmates who escaped from the facility is not yet known.
A spokesperson for police Lieutenant Colonel Ntsethe said the prison is busy conducting a roll call.
Police are covering the ground with search parties by foot and in vehicles and have re-arrested several escapees.
Members of the public are warned not to try to apprehend the escapees but to contact the Department of Correctional Services or the Malmesbury police.
Meanwhile, an investigation is underway to determine how the escape occurred.
Video footage circulating on social media show the inmates dressed in yellow prison uniforms running in a public road, while other clips show some of the escapees being rearrested.
