61 escapees from Malmesbury prison re-arrested

The Department of Correctional Services says 61 of the 69 inmates that escaped from Malmesbury Prison have been re-arrested.

The awaiting-trial prisoners escaped from the facility on Friday afternoon.

Western Cape Regional Commissioner, Delekile Klaas says eight detainees are still at large and most of them are from the Vredenburg area.

He says the incident happened when officials were providing exercise to inmates.

Klaas says the escapees overpowered officials, took the keys and locked three officials in a cell and opened other cells before escaping through the main entrance and over the roof.

During the incident, nine officials sustained minor injuries and bruises.

The Department says the centre is currently under lockdown in order to ensure stability.
