A 40-year-old man from Komatipoort in Mpumalanga has been given two life sentences for a rape and murder that occurred over three years ago.
The National Prosecuting Authority said Nicholas Janse Van Rensburg was sentenced in the High Court on Tuesday.
NPA regional spokesperson, Monica Nyuswa, said the attack on Zitha Nancy occurred on 19 October 2019 after a night out with friends at a local tavern, where Janse Van Rensburg left with Nancy to the home of one of the friends
She said when the homeowner, Bheki Vuma, returned from the tavern the following morning, he noticed blood on the floor and alerted neighbours who found Nancy on the floor bleeding profusely.
Nyuswa said Nancy, who had identified Janse Van Rensburg as her attacker, died in hospital two days later.
She said Vuma also confirmed during the trial that only Janse Van Rensburg had his house keys.
The NPA welcomed the sentence.
