'Don't judge me on my 22-second video' - Catzavelos

Adam Catzavelos has asked South Africans not judge him on his 22-second video made on a Greek beach in which he uses the K-word.

He was testifying in mitigation of sentence in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Thursday following his 2019 conviction on a charge of crimen injuria.

"I'm not making up excuses for what I did. What I did was disgusting, the most disgusting thing I've ever done in my life. But, all I can ask South Africa is not to judge me on my 22-second video that I did then and look at my actions now."

In terms of an earlier settlement agreement with the SA Human Rights Commission, Catzavelos will pay R150 000 to the Seth Mazibuko legacy foundation and also perform community service in Orlando for a period of six months.

He told the court that this experience was humbling for him.

"My first meeting with the community, I was obviously very anxious, not sure how things would go. I must say that from the moment I walked in and got to meet my gogos and mkulus I've had nothing but love and acceptance and forgiveness."

The EFF testified in aggravation of sentence.

The matter was postponed to 28 February.
