The Department of Health is pleading for more time to react to the serious allegations of corruption against Minister Zweli Mkhize.
This after Monday’s confirmation that the Special Investigating Unit’s(SIU) probe into top Health officials is at an advanced stage.
The Minister is accused of having a hand in the irregular procurement process of a Covid tender awarded to a KwaZulu-natal communications company.
Amongst others, Digital Vibes allegedly charged R3.65 million for the Minister to make a Covid-19 announcement on SABC in November last year, when the country entered the second wave.
The department issued a statement last night, saying the Minister will comment in public as soon as the final report is available and outcomes and recommendations can be announced.
According to the department, Mkhize is choosing to stay mum at this stage because he wants to ensure there is no interference with the investigations.
Officials do confirm that some glaring irregularities have already been uncovered that will have to be responded to and action will need to be taken.
In the meantime, the department asks the public not to draw premature conclusions and give the investigators the space they need.
