Disappointment as three double-murder accused are granted bail

The State not apposing their application for bail secured three alleged murderers from Algoa Park in Gqeberha freedom on Thursday when the New Brighton Magistrate's Court granted them bail of R1500 each.

They were arrested at their homes in Algoa Park two days earlier and more than three weeks after they allegedly brutally stabbed and killed two teenagers from neighbouring Missionvale.

The three murder-accused, identified as 21-year-old Nevan Prince, Jason du Preez who’s 22, and 31-year-old Amian Nelson, made a brief appearance in court before the case was postponed until 23 March 2023.

Family members, who said they were still in mourning, bemoaned the granting of bail.

“God will deal with them,” some of them shouted outside.

“We are very disappointed that those [alleged] killers got bail! Very disappointed!”

Some family members of the deceased, Elthan De Jager and Riaan Schutte – both 18 – had lamented the fact that they were only notified of the youngsters’ murders in January.

According to a police statement they were killed on 22 December, just three days before Christmas.

Their bodies were found just metres apart in the vicinity of Bloekom and Swarthout Streets in Algoa Park.

They had been stabbed several times.

The motive for the murders is still under investigation.
