Police in Phoenix, North of Durban have opened up an inquest docket after the body of a 68-year-old woman was discovered in her home on Monday.

The woman lived with her 47-year-old daughter who is mentally disabled.

Reaction Unit South Africa's Prem Balram says the neighbours became worried after they had not seen the lady for several days and when they asked the daughter she informed them that her mother was sleeping.

He says when they entered the house the daughter led them to the bedroom where they found the women partially covered in a blanket and in an advanced stage of decomposition.

Balram says the elderly woman had no visible injuries to her body.

The daughter was placed in the care of family members who arrived at the scene.

A post mortem will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

The name of the deceased was not released.
