A Danish woman who has been on the run for years was arrested in Johannesburg on Monday.
The 65-year-old Anna Britta Nielson and her son Jimmy Hayat have been wanted by Denmark police for fraud involving R247 million which is approximately 100 million Krone.
Nielson allegedly swindled the Danish Government out of 111 million Krone over a 16-year-period.
Police Minister Bheki Cele announced the pair's arrest on Tuesday.
He said on the 30th of October the son was arrested at the OR Tambo International Airport. He had a one-way ticket out of the country with R5 000 cash and two diamonds.
Hayat appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrates court where his case was postponed to the 8th of November.
His mother Anna was arrested shortly after.
Cele said this should be a sign that criminals should not make use of South Africa to be their safe haven.
The Danish government has already started with extradition procedures.
