A Suspect who was arrested over the weekend killed a fellow inmate and injured four others after trying to make a daring escape at the Isipingo police station in Durban.
A Spokesperson for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate Moses Dlamini said the prisoner was allegedly not searched when he was arrested.
The inmate then took out a gun and tried to 'shoot' his way out of custody, killing an inmate and injuring four others.
Dlamini said police returned fire and wounded the armed inmate.
He said in the scuffle two trail awaiting prisoners managed to escape.
IPID will be investigating negligence against the police at the station for not properly searching and disarming a trial awaiting prisoner.
A case of murder and attempted murder will also be investigated against the shooter.
All injured inmates are being treated in Hospital.
