The hunger strike initiated by inmates at the Groenpunt maximum prison in Deneysville, where 50 inmates and 7 warders were injured during riots on Monday, has ended.
The prisoners had been refusing to eat since citing various complaints, including the poor quality of food and medical supplies.
The prison service has yet to reveal how much damage was caused after 6 cells and 3 administration offices were set alight.
Free State police spokesperson Peter Kareli says police have been monitoring the situation since Wednesday, when inmates began the hunger strike.
He says the strike ended after a meeting with prison management aimed at addressing the prisoners' grievances.
Kareli says an operations centre has been established at the prison and no further incidents have been reported.
