Delay in planned strike in gold sector

A planned Amcu strike in the gold sector was delayed, when the ruling on an application to prevent it, was postponed by the Johannesburg Labour Court on Wednesday.

Judge Hamilton Cele postponed the matter to the 30th of January.

The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union intended to strike in the gold sector today, after issuing employers with strike notices earlier in the week.

The union wants an entry-level monthly salary of R12 500.

Gold producers represented by the Chamber of Mines resolved to challenge the legality of the strike and seek damages from the union.

Meanwhile, Impala Platinum cancelled its Wednesday night shift at its Rustenburg operations late in the afternoon, and says it will continue to do so for the duration of Amcu's planned strike.

Company spokesperson, Alice Lourens says this was to mitigate the risk of violence and to ensure the safety of their employees.

Anglo American Platinum and Lonmin Platinum's Amcu-aligned workers will also be going on strike today.

The labour ministry says a meeting between Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant, AMCU and the Chamber of Mines will likely take place on Friday.

Oliphant said on Tuesday that she would lead the department in talks to attempt to avert Amcu's strike in both the platinum and gold sectors.
