There will be dedicated courts to deal with Covid19-related procurement corruption cases, according to the Minister of Justice and Corrections, Ronald Lamola.
The Minister, who is also the chairperson of the Inter-Ministerial Committee tasked “with empowering and enhancing the work of all law enforcement agencies in fight corruption”, briefed the Standing Committee on Public Accounts on Friday.
According to a Scopa statement, Lamola said the budget for the dedicated courts will include allocations from different departments.
Committee chairperson, Mkhuleko Hlengwa, said they urged the IMU to be decisive in dealing with departments that do not cooperate, especially regarding the provision of information.
He said the “effectiveness of the IMC was the focal point of the Committee so that consequence management can be expedited.”
Hlengwa said Scopa believed that concrete results should include the successful prosecution of the perpetrators of corruption with “effective consequences.”
He said that the heads of the Special Investigative Unit, Auditor-General, South African Revenue Services, SAPS, Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authority, also briefed Scopa on their roles in the fight against corruption.
