Death toll on roads climb to 765

Twenty six people were killed and 44 injured in road accidents across the country over the weekend.

The worst accident happened on the N9 between Aberdeen and Willowmore.

Eastern Cape traffic spokesperson Tshepo Machaea says 5 people were killed and 7 injured, when a minibus-taxi overturned.

The national road death toll was at 765 on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Transport Minister Ben Martins has urged motorists travelling on South Africa's roads during the festive season to prioritise life above personal convenience.

He says if each motorist aim to save a life each time they got into their vehicles, the nation will make considerable progress in the fight against the road death toll.

He says the country needs a 360-degree turn in driver attitudes if it is to succeed.

People need a rethink of their responsibilities towards a safe and sustainable society.
