Police said the number of suspected cash-in-transit robbers killed in a shootout with police in Sebokeng in Gauteng, has risen to nine.
National police spokesperson, Colonel Athlenda Mathe, said three others are under police guard in hospital following the shootout at a house early on Thursday morning.
She said members of the Tactical Response Team were following up on crime intelligence-driven information about a group planning to commit a cash-in-transit robbery.
Mathe said they were traced to an address in Sebokeng where the gun battle ensued.
She said eight suspects were killed on the scene while the ninth suspect died later in hospital.
Members of the Explosives Unit have rendered the recovered explosives safe in the interest of the community.
Police Minister, Bheki Cele, said he was confident that police were making serious inroads in the fight against serious and violent crime.
“If they come hard on us, we came harder on them, it’s them and us on behalf of the community,” he said.
Cele said police would be on high alert across the country ahead of the busy Easter weekend.
