Death crash driver a "repeat offender"

The Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court heard yesterday that the driver of the truck which ploughed into 45 vehicles and another heavy duty truck near Alberton on Tuesday, was a repeat offender.

Isaac Maruding had been arrested for reckless and negligent driving in 1996.

He was sentenced a year later to 18 months in prison but this had been suspended for four years.
In 1999, he was arrested again on a charge of culpable homicide in the Free State and as a result his suspended sentence was invoked and Maruding spent 18 months behind bars.

Prosecutor John Ntuli revealed the details of Maruding's previous convictions during his first court appearance on Thursday for the deadly Alberton smash in which four people were killed.

He'll remain in custody until his next court appearance on the 22nd of October when he will appear for a formal bail application.
