Death and destruction in Mpumalanga and KZN

Fourteen people have died after a bridge collapsed on the R-65 between Lothair and Ermelo due to heavy rains.

Joseph Mabuza of the Mpumalanga community safety department says three vehicles including a taxi were involved in the tragic accident.

He says the vehicles drove over the collapsed bridge and were swept away by high volumes of water.

The bridge collapsed shortly before 10pm on Monday night, with six people initially killed and others declared missing.

Police retrieved the remaining bodies on Tuesday.

Meanwhile Kwazulu Natal authorities have confirmed 10 deaths as a result of heavy rains that have lashed the province.

Local Government MEC, Nomusa Dube, says another 3 people are missing.

Meanwhile, e-Thekwini spokesperson, Eugene Msomi reports that a number of shacks had collapsed and were swept away in several informal settlements.

The National Sea Rescue Institute reports that 6 children and an adult are missing after being trapped on an island in the Umzinto River, near Durban.
