DBE reaches settlement with Enock Mpianzi's family

Jacaranda FM

The family of 13-year-old Parktown Boys’ High School pupil Enock Mpianzi and the Department of Education in Gauteng have reached a settlement.

The 13- year-old drowned during a Grade 8 orientation camp at Nyati Bush and River Break Lodge near Brits in January last year.

The family’s lawyer Wikus Steyl says since none of the defendants confirmed nor denied anything, it was a matter of closing the case.

He says the amount cannot be disclosed, but after many months and long negotiations, they’ve finally came to terms with which the parents are happy with.

Initially, the family demanded R10 million from the Department of Education.

The Gauteng Department of Education released a forensic report last year implicating five teachers, the headmaster and the lodge in the drowning.

In January last year, the Principal for the Parktown Boys High School was suspended.
