Day one of the the National Assembly debate on the President's State of the Nation Address started with interruptions from several MP's raising points of order.
Parliament is set to debate SONA on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Trade and Industry Minister, Rob Davies, opened the talks, touching on the country's economic challenges and said South Africa was not the only nation experiencing an economic downturn.
DA leader, Mmusi Maimane, then took the stand, immediately taking aim at President Jacob Zuma - describing him as operating on Planet Zuma - a parallel universe far, far away from ordinary South Africans.
Highlighting an array of achievements by the DA run Western Cape government, Maimane looked the President in the eye and asked him how he could live with his own conscience.
" We need a president who is in touch with the people of this country, we need a president who puts people first and himself last. You sir , are not that president" he said.
