Police commissioner, general Rhia Phiyega, has suspended the station commissioner of the Daveyton police as well as eight police members involved in a police brutality scandal.
Their suspensions come in the wake of the death of taxi driver Mido Macia.
He died in custody at the Daveyton police station this week after being cuffed and dragged behind a police vehicle.
The incident was filmed by a by-stander on a cellphone and the footage shown around the world.
Meanwhile, the ANC has condemned the incident.
National spokesperson, Jackson Mthembu, says the role of the police is protect and preserve life.
