DA parliamentary leader, Lindiwe Mazibuko, says president Jacob Zuma should retract a statement he made in parliament implying that some people have more rights than others.
Speaking at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth on Monday, Mazibuko said Zuma should also apologise for his remark.
The presidency said Zuma's comments had been misconstrued by the DA after Mazibuko had asked him why the trade union Amcu was not involved in talks to resolve the crisis at Marikana mine.
In his response Zuma suggested that Amcu had fewer rights than Cosatu because it was in the minority in the same way that the DA had fewer rights than the ANC because it too was in the minority.
Mazibuko says the parliamentary record spoke for itsself.
"The ANC has behaved for many years like an organisation that doesn't need to adhere to the Constitution if it get in its way. It simply must change it or do something to get it out of its way in order to allow itself unfettered power," she said.
"So, the president needs to retract his statement and says this is not how a president of South Africa should conduct himself and he needs to apologise to South Africans for implying that some have more rights than others."
